Handy Tips for Family Road Trips
We have all been there; planning a family road trip. It doesn't matter if it's a few hours to the lake or cross-country to Grandma's.
You know there will be plenty of whining, moaning and complaining along the way. Road trips can be boring and tiring, but it doesn't have to be that way, it just takes some planning ahead of time.
Here are some tips to help:
1. Make sure you check out your vehicle. It may sound simple, but this is the most important thing you can do. Check your tire pressure and battery. Make sure you have packed the battery jumper cables, jack, first aid kit, flares and extra bottled water. Be like the proverbial Boy Scout, be prepared. This will provide peace of mind, in case of emergencies.
2.Leave early. Mkae sure you have allowed exta time to get to get to your destination. This will take the stress out in case of delays and will allow for unexpected stops at interesting tourists stops that enrich all road trips.
3. Let the children pack themselves. This allows them to feel like they are part of the process. It is also a great way to teach them how to prepare for a trip. Also, encourage them to pack toys they haven't played with for awhile, the toys will seem fresher during the trip.
4.Don't forget the lovies. Little ones will travel better with that favorite blankie and stuffed animal; it helps them cope with all the anxieties of travel.
5. Pack plenty of crumb free snacks such as apples, nuts, fruit roll-ups, or cheese. This will keep the car neater and easier to manage. Also, keep the snacks and cooler where you can easily access them to cut down on unnecessary stops.
6.Take breaks. Make sure to stop every 2-3 hours to stretch your legs and allow little ones to burn some of that energy off.
7. Leave early. If you leave a few hours before breakfast, it may allow for some extra sleep and fewer hours of boredom just sitting around in a car wondering how much longer till we get there.
8. Pack plenty of entertainment. I-pods, portable video games, magazines amongst other essentials help while away those hours until arrival at final destination.
Road trips can be a struggle or a really fun family time, it just takes planning ahead. Hopefully, these simple tips will help you plan a fun road trip for everyone to enjoy no matter how far or what age is involved.
