Belize’s Chaa Creek – Top 10 NatGeo Destination 2012

Eco-Tourism in Bali

As we get nearer to the New Year, we all start to think about where we want to go on those all important vacations. We want those destinations to be full of adventure and leave us a bounty of lifetime memories.

National Geographic has drawn up its list of Top 10  Destinations for 2012. Here is one of our favorites:

National Geographic has announced The Lodge at Chaa Creek, Belize's premier rainforest eco resort, as one of the top ten "Best Adventure Destinations for 2012". The recent announcement states, "Just when it seemed impossible to find untrammelled singletrack in Europe or snorkel uncharted waters in Australia, we're here to remind you that optimism pays off," and continues to say that events " can make a well-travelled planet feel full of new frontiers again.

The article, listed under the heading, Go Now, notes Chaa Creek's idyllic location between the important ancient Maya cities of Caracol and Tikal and describes the many adventures and activities available within Chaa Creek's 365 acre nature reserve. Chaa Creek hosts many diverse events to include the Maya Winter Solstice 2012 adventure vacation package with classes on folklore, music, medicinal plants, farming techniques, and cooking including traditional cacao preparation as well as canoe excursions to ceremonial caves, snorkelling the Belize Great Barrier Reef, Maya spa treatments and other Maya cultural adventures.

"To be recognised by National Geographic as one of the top ten destinations in the entire world, well, that pretty much says it all," Chaa Creek owner and GM Lucy Fleming said. "As lifelong travellers and having been in adventure travel for over three decades, naturally recognise National Geographic as the world's top travel authority. To be recognised by an organisation and publication we hold in such high esteem is truly an honour."

Mick Fleming and his wife, Lucy, started Chaa Creek in the late 1970s as a family farm. They just celebrated Chaa Creek's 30th anniversary as Belize's first eco resort in September 2011 along with their 135 staff members.

Situated along the banks of the Macal River Chaa Creek's private nature reserve contains over 70 Maya archaeological sites and the ancient Maya temple of Tunichilen. The reserve abounds in wildlife and over 300 species of birds, and offers guided nature walks, hiking, horseback and mountain bike riding along miles of jungle and grassland trails and canoeing along the Macal River.

Accommodations range from lovely thatched roof cottage rooms and luxury Jacuzzi villas set in tropical gardens to more rustic private bungalows at the Macal River Camp, and amenities include a renowned restaurant, jungle lounge, conference centre, spa, Hilltop Butterfly Farm, The Natural History Centre, Maya Medicinal Plant Trail, the Maya organic Farm, pool and stables.

"This recognition from National Geographic makes us realise how far we've come in 30 years," Ms Fleming said, "It's really the best icing you could wish for on your birthday cake Click Here for Original

Dubai – A New Port of Call

Cruise enthusiasts now have additional choices when it comes to cruise destination. The Arabian Gulf offers tourists new sites and adventures rather the usual Caribbean or Mediterranean fare.

Several cruise lines have announced they will operate a weekly itinerary in the Arabian featuring Dubai as a major stop. Dubai has made major changes to its port to insure tourists have a world class port of call.

The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) organized a grand welcome ceremony at the Dubai Cruise Terminal to mark the maiden calls of Costa Favalosa and Aida Blu cruise ships to Dubai.

The announcement for the newly-inducted cruise ships, which will offer weekly regional itinerary with Dubai as the home port, came at a ceremony attended by senior officials of Dubai Customs, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), DP World and World Security at the terminal and DTCM Director-General, Khalid A bin Sulayem, among others.

Costa Favalosa is a new cruise liner made by Costa Crociere of Italy and was inaugurated on July 2, 2011 in Trieste. The 114,500 tonnage ship has a carrying capacity of 3800 passengers and 1110 crew. Aida Blu is a new cruise liner from Aida Cruisesmade in Germany , with a capacity to carry 2050 passengers and 607 crew members.

Both Costa Favalosa and Aida Blu will operate weekly cruise itinerary in the Arabian Gulf with Dubai as their home port. Favalosa will bring more than 100,000 passengers in 19 calls to Dubai and Aida Blu will account for more than 50,000 cruise passengers to Dubai in 13 calls to Dubai in the 2011/12 cruise season.

Dubai will close this year by receiving 135 cruise ships with 375,000 tourists while 2012 is expected to bring in 150 cruise ships with about 425,000 passengers.

Addressing a Press conference, Hamad bin Mejren, DTCM Executive Director for Business Tourism, said: “It has been over a decade since DTCM began to promote cruise tourism to Dubai. Our continued efforts in conjunction with our 18 overseas representative offices and the opening of the first state-of-the-art cruise terminal in Dubai in 2001 began to draw the attention of the cruise lines around the world when we received 17 ship calls and 6,900 passengers in the first year.”

He said DTCM was already in collaboration with its partners, DP World, to  build additional cruise terminal facilities to cater the anticipated growth of the business. We forecast 150 ship calls with a passenger turnaround of more than 600,000 passengers by 2015, he added

Road Trip – Family Car or Rental?

Snow Covered Road

You may be wondering whether your older family car is in good enough shape for that long holiday road trip you have planned to Florida to visit Grandma or the Rockies for that much anticipated ski getaway.

After all, the average car on American highways and byways is now more than 9 years old after a tough downturn that has driven home the virtue of making do, says John Paul, a spokesman for AAA of Southern New England and host of the "Car Doctor," a weekly radio program.

The family car might do just fine with a little maintenance beforehand. A vacation road trip could also prove to be a break for your car, especially if you routinely drive in stop-and-go commuter traffic back and forth to work. "Driving at a pretty steady, 60- to 65-mile-per-hour pace is actually pretty easy on a car," Paul says.

However, renting could turn out to be the better option  especially if your older car has had a nagging, long-term mechanical problem. As you consider whether to take your own car or rent one, here are four things to do before deciding.

Put your car through a careful checkup, especially if you are a neglectful owner. The top reasons people call AAA for roadside assistance is for dead batteries or flat tires, Paul says. Take your car to your local garage and get a thorough tuneup. Get that battery, alternator and fan belt checked out and make sure they are in good working condition. Don't forget your tires, check mileage and tire pressure. Correct tire pressure is critical for proper wear and optimal gas mileage.

Crunch the numbers. Getting your car ready for a long road trip will require some cash, but it is likely to be more cost-effective than renting. Expect to lay out at least a few hundred dollars, depending on how much work needs to be done, says Dan Edmunds, director of vehicle testing at auto website Edmunds.com.

However, renting a full-size car such as a Chevy Impala for two weeks could cost you at least $530, according to rates posted on the Avis website. And, whether you rent or take your own car, you still have to pay for gas.

If your car is approaching the 200,000-mile mark and you plan to rack up several thousand miles on an epic cross-continent tour, maybe it's time for a rental, Paul says. On the other hand, if your trip is the eight-hour drive from Washington, D.C., to Boston, you should be able to make that trip, he says.

If your car has a history of chronic problems, this should be taken into consideration, Edmunds says. If that shimmy in the steering wheel won't go away or you have to bang on the dashboard to get the radio to work, leave the old jalopy in the driveway.

"Renting is a way of having a nearly new car for that two-week period," Edmunds says. "If you don't really trust your car, if you have a car that is a little bit of a nagging worry, you don't want to take it."

These tips are good to keep in mind when thinking about any road trip, even if that road trip is just down the street to your local park. We all have to try and make our money stretch as far as possible. When it comes to our cars, maintenance is the key. This will allow you to make all of those much-anticipated road trips to each and every destination on your bucket list.

Please leave comments about your favorite road trips and tips for your fellow travelers. So safe and happy travels to all!

Bali – Eco-Tourism at Its Best

Bali Hotel

Bali is one of the world's most famous island tourist destinations in the world. This island in Indonesia has idyllic beaches, endless surf, easygoing population and exotic culture which make it a must visit for many.

Eco-tourists will enjoy all the diverse and environmentally friendly options Bali has to offer. Beaches, volcanoes, and lush tropical forests offer beautiful, natural scenery for all to enjoy.

There are plenty of Green choices on Bali in all facets of the travel experience. There are eco-friendly choices for transportation, lodging, eating and just green sight-seeing.

Known as the “Island of the Gods,” Bali draws everyone from surfers to young backpackers with only a few dollars in their pocket to ultra-wealthy resort-goers. Many focus on the beach, the water and the nature and culture sites. However, the island is filled with eco-tourism opportunities because of its natural interior and its diverse set of landscapes, which include mountains, terraced rice fields, forests, savannas and a coastline that fluctuates between rugged and pristine.

The main form of public transportation is provided by minibuses known as bemos. These minivan-type vehicles are found throughout Bali.. One semi-public-transit option is to book a shuttle bus from a tour company. These have more amenities their bemo counterparts. These are useful for cross-island travel.Brave visitors who can deal with any traffic and safety concerns can rent small (125 cc or less), gas-sipping motorcycles and bicycles.

Eco-tourists can find many options for green lodging. Some of our favorites include the Udayana Kingfisher Eco-Lodge. It overlooks a beach and is also within eyeshot of Agung Mountain, one of Bali's tallest and most picture-worthy peaks. Udayana’s 24 acres are a haven for birds and butterflies, with more than 80 species of the colorful insects and 50 avian species (including several varieties of the lodge's namesake kingfishers) on site.

Hotel Uyah Amed located,in eastern Bali, was built using sustainable, environmentally friendly principles. The Uyah has green features like solar power, efficient appliances and an on-site organic garden. Diving and trekking opportunities are available within a short distance.

It is easy to eat local, fresh foods while on the island. Vegetarians and vegans will find themselves with a wide variety of meatless eating options from upscale specialty restaurants to local Vega-oriented eateries. Most of these places serve traditional Indonesian, Balinese and Chinese cuisine, so visitors are likely to find a solid list of local dishes instead of the funky fusion and faux meat dishes that plague some places' vegetarian scenes.

For fresh local foods, the Ubud Organic Market in the central Balinese town of Ubud is a unique option. This market runs each Saturday and features produce, herbs and artisanal products (of an organic nature) sold by local producers. Another green spot in Ubud is Sari Organic, a small, hard-to-find restaurant that can best be reached by foot. It is adjacent to a farm that bears the same name. Imagine eating fresh food from the fields across the street.

Bali is known for its surfing even though it does not boast the mammoth waves of Oahu's North Shore . Beaches on both the east and west parts of the island's coastline have virtually uninterrupted surf. Surfing schools are available for the beginner.

Underwater sports like snorkeling and scuba diving are very popular sports on Bali. Tulamben Bay, in northeastern Bali, is has clear waters and an unspoiled marine-scape. Nusa Dua, on the opposite end of the island is also the location of some of the island's best dive spots. Coral reefs hold abundant wildlife, and the shallow depths mean that the area can easily be explored by snorkel by people who don't want to strap on oxygen tanks.

Bali Barat National Park (Taman Nasional Bali Barat) is a 190-square-mile area of protected land in west Bali. It is the island's only national park. Landscapes inside the confines of Bali Barat include savannas, mountains and monsoon-fed jungle. There is also an additional 27 square miles of marine landscape and coral islands off the coast. The park is home to hundreds of species of plants and animals, the most famous being the endangered Bali starling.

Bali's monkey forests are popular with tourists (though they are probably not  what most nature-lovers would consider high-quality eco-tourism attractions). The Sangeh Monkey Forest is easy to reach from both Denpasar and Kuta Beach.  The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is less touristy and boasts similarly natural landscapes to go along with its headlining primates.

Bali Bird Park is a conservation-minded attraction that includes a five-acre bird sanctuary with botanical-garden-like landscapes. Tropical birds, parrots, the local endangered Bali starling, along with more than 40 protected bird species call the park home.

Mount Agung, a picturesque volcanic mountain, is one of Bali's highest peaks and a great spot for mountain trekking. The trek to the top can take less than a day and can be done without guides, though guides are available in the towns near the trailheads where the ascent starts.

The Bali Mangrove Information Center is a Japanese-funded project that seeks to preserve mangrove forest and educate the public about this type of eco-system. There are boardwalk trails through the surrounding protected areas.

If you want a full-on eco-adventure or just a quiet, sandy spot to listen to the surf rolling onto the beach, Bali is an  ideal destination for all eco-tourists.

Check out Original.

Bali is definitely on my bucket list. I have always wanted to travel there, and it is even more inviting as an eco-tourism destination. Its wonderful knowing you can take a vacation to one of the most beautiful places and still be environmentally friendly. To me, that is like sprinkles and a cherry on top of the hot fudge sundae.

Let me know if you think of any other beautiful, environmentally friendly destinations I can share with our fellow tourists. I look forward to reading all of your comments! Green travels to all!
